Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting
What Is The Difference Between Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting?
This can be easily explained, by thinking of a triangle. Cleaning, which is used to remove dirt or debris from a surface, takes the bottom slot in this triangle. It is the broadest, most and first level. Sanitising is in the middle layer since this method removes the microbes from surfaces and also kills bacteria.
Then at the very top of the triangle is disinfecting. Its the most narrowly defined of the cleaning methods. So while cleaning is sufficient in the short term for certain surfaces, it is essential to regularly carry out the 3 layers of cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting. This is especially true in facilities / industries where there is a high volume of people coming in to contact with many surfaces.
Product manufacturers and agencies use the word “sanitising” to refer to a solution or device that reduces the amount of germs on a surface to a level that’s considered safe by public health standards.
They use the word “disinfecting” for chemical products that are designed to “kill virtually all bacteria, viruses and germs” on the surface. Cleaning before sanitising or disinfection is greatly advised as organic matter and dirt not removed reduces the ability of some disinfectants to be able to kill the germs.
Cleaning Removes Germs:
Cleaning means physically removing germs, dirt and organic matter from surfaces. Cleaning alone does not kill germs, but by reducing the number of germs on surfaces
Sanitising Reduces Germs:
Sanitising lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects—either by killing them or removing them.
Disinfection Kills Germs:
Disinfection means using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces, but by killing germs that remain on surfaces, disinfection greatly reduces the risk of spreading infection.
